Connecticut's Child Support Guidelines

Child support obligations are based upon guidelines set forth in the Connecticut statutes. The support payments are based on a number of factors, including the custody arrangements, parenting time schedule and each parent’s income. Connecticut's child support guidelines also require each parent to contribute to work-related daycare expenses and any medical expenses for the children that are not covered by health insurance.

In some situations, it may be difficult to agree on child support amounts, and advice from an experienced family law attorney may be helpful. For example:

  • Parental income is difficult to determine because of self-employment, multiple jobs or income hiding. Forensic experts may be needed to determine actual income as opposed to claimed income by one or both parties
  • There may be unusually high costs for the child to travel to and from the non-custodial parent for parenting time.
  • The child may be enrolled in private school or involved in expensive extracurricular activities.

Contributions to a Child's College Education

A Connecticut child support law effective in 2002 — commonly known as the Educational Support Order — states that a divorce decree can require financial support for a child after the age of majority provided the child is a full-time student. These support payments are usually in the form of support towards a child’s college education or other post-high school education programs. Arrangements for financial contribution toward a child's college education either can be part of the original divorce decree or can be decided on by the parents, or the court, later as the child approaches college age.
